Oxford House is a non-profit organization that provides a peer-supported and drug-free environment for individuals recovering from alcohol or drug addiction. The first Oxford House was established in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1975 by a group of recovering individuals who wanted to create a safe and sober living space for themselves and others like them.
Since then, the Oxford House model has expanded across the United States and into other countries, with over 2,000 houses in operation as of 2021. Each Oxford House is democratically run by its residents, who are responsible for paying rent and maintaining the property.
Oxford Houses are not treatment centers or halfway houses, but rather a long-term recovery solution for those who have already completed drug or alcohol treatment programs. Residents must remain sober and abide by a set of house rules, which may include attending regular house meetings and seeking employment or education opportunities.
Research has shown that the Oxford House model is an effective and cost-efficient way to maintain sobriety and reduce the risk of relapse among those in recovery from addiction.
